The work was carried out on two large canvases located inside the Basilica of San Bernardino in L’Aquila: A Depiction of the Crucifixion and The Apparition of God the Father, by Flemish painter Aert Mytens and dated 1599. The intervention was preceded by a complex disassembly phase, in which the paintings were moved from their original location.
The restoration consisted of the following phases: restoration of the support and frame, consolidation of the pictorial layers, a cleaning of the pictorial layers, a pictorial integration, and a final patination. After these steps were completed, the paintings were relocated to their original location.
Thanks to a complex ring scaffold, all operations were carried out vertically.
